Beter communiceren is gelijk aan beter fotograferen en dus betere resultaten. Goed dat laatste hopen we.
Om ons eens niet bezig te houden met technische zaken trokken we afgelopen weekend naar de straten van Gent om er totale vreemden aan te spreken en van hen een portret te maken.
Klinkt eenvoudig maar dat is het niet. Stel je maar eens voor dat je 2 rare snuiters ziet staan en die komen op je afgestapt met een groot zwart ding in hun handen en ze vragen je of je foto’s van hen mag nemen.
Wel we hebben het niet op die manier gevraagd maar goed jullie snappen het plaatje wel.
Zeg hierbij nog eens dat het gratis is, dat je het voor je plezier doet en dat ze de foto’s gewoon krijgen en men wordt echt wel achterdochtig.
Wie dit zelf eens wil proberen : let op voor oude dames “ik zie daar het nut niet van in meneer” en zeker als ze een wandelstok hebben.
Maar goed in het centrum van Gent vonden we toch enkele mensen die het wouden doen.
Hieronder de resultaten. Geen fijne selectie maar alle shots die genomen geweest zijn. Inderdaad het ging niet om zo veel foto’s nemen en hopen op een goede maar om goede communicatie en zo weten dat hij goed zal zijn.
O ja : 1 toestel, 1 lens en 1 flitser en deze laatste staat voor iedereen die we gefotografeerd hebben perfect gelijk.

Finding models : Shout on facebook and most of the times you *this part is censored* that want to get payed and deliver duck faces and overacted poses as seen on “America next top model”.
Finding real models is a lot more difficult if you want to do a fun shoot. You book them(and pay them) and most of the time you will get good results.
Well, we have all done that before and in the end it’s “to easy”.
If you want great portfolio pictures the above situation is what you need,but not if you want to improve in giving directions like sit, stand up, right,left, bark… (I should try that last one once), you will need real people.
This because most of my jobs are with real normal -not used to stand in front of a camera- people. So a professional model is not a benefit in this exercise.
Learning where to set your light, adjusting and tweaking them can all be learned from the internet and tested out a million times thanks to one great invention : The digital camera.
Why investing more time in communication then in test shooting ?
Let me explain :
Most of the times a client chooses his pictures from my pre-selection. Almost of the times it is not the most perfect picture or the one I like the most but the one that the moment it was taking was just “right”.
To achieve more of those “just the right moment ” pictures it comes down to communication, directions and more people-interacting-skills.
And ofcourse , I’m not the “it has to be pixel perfect guy”. I’m more the “give the client a great experience type of photographer”(and of course good pictures).
The feeling my client gets when looking at the picture is everything. That it is not perfect rembrand light or butterfly or….well I couldn’t care less.
What did we do to evolve?
To evolve in this part of photography I went out to the centre of Gent(Belgium) together with my buddy Filip to shoot total strangers.
Strangers as in : we see them on the street, ask them if they want to let some pictures taken and you take the pictures. This on a cold saturday afternoon on a windy location and a lot of people around them.
As easy as it sounds so difficult it is.
Questions and rejections
Most people are suspicious when you say it is free, yes free and that it is just for fun.What are you going to do with them is also a question you get a lot of times.
The best rejection-reply we got was from an 80-ish old lady : I see no point in doing that boy.
If you want to do this yourself : be prepared for some hard rejections.(tip : avoid old lades and men with walking sticks).
